MERCURY (MERCURIUS)

Mercury is associated with intelligence , communication, mental agility, and movement. In alchemy, it is the connecting principle between Spirit and Matter (Sun and Moon) and is symbolized by Hermes Trismegistus , the messenger of the gods.

Alchemical and Astronomical Context

  • Mercury is one of the Seven Classical Planets and is the fastest planet, which links it to travel, trade and the nervous system.

  • It symbolizes dialectics, learning and the ability to analyze and transmit information.

Fundamental Alchemical Connections

  • Alchemical Metal: Mercury (Hydrargyrum) . Mercury (or quicksilver) is the only liquid metal at room temperature and symbolizes volatility , transformation, and the ability to penetrate all other elements. It is one of the three pillars of Paracelsus's Tria Prima (Sulfur, Salt, Mercury).

  • Element: Air (predominantly). Air symbolizes thought, speech, expression, and the rapid spread of ideas.

  • Alchemical Phase: Often associated with the transition between phases, as its role is that of a catalyst that accelerates the transformation process (the alchemical Hermes).

Properties of Stones

  • Stones associated with Mercury (such as Agate , Aventurine or Beryl ) are used to improve concentration, learning ability, verbal communication and to facilitate physical and astral travel.

  • These gems work primarily on the Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) , the center of expression, and the Third Eye (Ajna) , the center of perception and intuition.
