Physical and chemical characteristics of Turquoise

Turquoise is a hydrated basic copper-aluminum phosphate, with the chemical formula CuAl₆(PO₄)₄(OH)₈ 4H₂O. It has a hardness between 5 and 6 on the Mohs scale, a waxy or matte luster, and a color ranging from sky blue to azure-green, depending on the concentration of copper (blue) or iron (green). It is a sacred stone in numerous traditions, a symbol of protection, truth, healing, and celestial connection. Considered a talisman of travelers, shamans, and healers, turquoise stabilizes mood, facilitates expression, and protects the energetic body.

Family of belonging, sister stones and colors

Turquoise is unique in its composition, but can be symbolically paired with stones such as amazonite, chrysocolla, and larimar. Its colors range from sky blue to aquamarine, often with brown or black veining due to its matrix. It is the stone that unites heaven and earth, spirit and word, sacred and everyday.

Most important deposits and countries

The most important deposits are found in Iran (Persia), the United States (especially Arizona and Nevada), China, Egypt, Tibet, and Mexico. In Persia, it was the stone of heaven, in Tibet a life-giving amulet, and in the Americas, an indigenous symbol of connection with the Spirits. Used since ancient times to create jewelry, amulets, scepters, and ritual objects, turquoise is one of the oldest known gemstones.
