The Initiatory Library of Stones - Onyx
Physical and chemical characteristics of onyx
Onyx is a variety of chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline quartz composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). It is characterized by a parallel banded structure, generally black in color, but can also have white, brown, or gray streaks. Its hardness ranges from 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, and its luster is typically vitreous. Black onyx is the most well-known and used in symbolic and esoteric contexts, often chosen for its protective function and its connection to the inner shadow. It is a stone that stabilizes, protects, structures, and invites conscious introspection. It is the silent mirror of the deepest soul.
family of belonging, sister stones and colors
Onyx belongs to the quartz family, specifically the chalcedony family. Its spiritual siblings include agate, obsidian, and hematite, with which it shares protective and centering qualities. Its primary colors are black, black with white or gray veins. It is the stone of steadfastness, determination, and protection during processes of inner retreat or confrontation with the unconscious.
most important deposits and countries
The main onyx deposits are found in Brazil, India, Uruguay, Madagascar, Pakistan, Mexico, and even Italy. Used since ancient times to create cameos, seals, and amulets, onyx was considered a stone of power, often associated with rites of passage, moments of mourning, and wisdom gained in silence. Each onyx is a mineral threshold between light and darkness, between what is known and what has yet to emerge.
zodiac – onyx
Onyx is associated with the sign of Capricorn (December 22nd – January 20th), an earth sign linked to responsibility, time, resilience, and spiritual depth. It helps Capricorn resist the burden of duties, offering grounding, determination, and inner strength. Its ruling planet is Saturn, guardian of karma and time. With onyx, Saturn reveals its face as a stern yet just master. The symbolic constellation is the phoenix, which rises from the ashes with clarity and renewed strength.
onyx element
Onyx is connected to the earth element, but with a profound energy. It is not a fertile or light earth, but rather compact, mountainous, and reflective. It acts on the first chakra and sometimes the sixth, for its ability to aid in moments of psychic darkness and deep meditation. It stabilizes, protects, and closes energy leaks.

Tarot – Arcanum: The Hermit
The hermit represents the wisdom of silence, the knowledge gathered in darkness. Onyx is the inner lantern that illuminates the soul's solitary path.
i ching – hexagram 52: the mountain

element: metal
The dog is a symbol of loyalty and protection. The metal enhances the onyx's effect as an energetic shield. This stone strengthens the capacity for inner vigilance, self-fidelity, and the ability to discern truth from falsehood.
Ancient Egyptian Zodiac – Onyx
sign: Anubis
deity: Anubis
Anubis, lord of thresholds and transitions, spiritual guide of the deceased, is associated with onyx for its function of silent accompaniment in the darkness. It is the stone of the initiatory labyrinth, of the inner journey that passes through the shadows to reach the light of knowledge. With Anubis, onyx is a seal of protection for the soul on its journey.
the symbolic guardians of the stones
The onyx keeper is the guardian of the shadow. He doesn't fear silence, he doesn't shy away from the night. He teaches us to stay where others flee. He is the guardian of unspoken truths, of buried memories, of inner paths where we encounter ourselves without masks. With onyx, the guardian invites us to understand the shadow in order to integrate it, to cross the void to return to wholeness.
shamanism
In the shamanic path, onyx is the stone of threshold and return. It is used in rites of protection and sacred separation, and in moments when clear energetic boundaries need to be established. It does not induce visions, but it safeguards the journey.
Her spirit animal is the raven: a symbol of mystery, a messenger between worlds, a mediator between life and death. With onyx, the raven teaches the art of reading shadows, of fertile silence, of the word that emerges only when necessary.
