Physical and chemical characteristics of Larimar

Larimar is a rare variety of pectolite, with the chemical formula NaCa₂Si₃O₈(OH). It crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system, has a hardness of 4.5–5 on the Mohs scale, and a vitreous to silky luster. Its color ranges from sky blue to light turquoise, often with white or green veins reminiscent of the movement of waves. It is considered the stone of ocean peace, angelic communication, and emotional harmony. Larimar is a profoundly feminine stone, linked to the element of water and Goddess energy.

Larimar belongs to the pectolite family. Its spiritual sisters are chrysocolla, amazonite, and angelite. Its primary colors are azure, light blue, aquamarine, and light turquoise. It is the stone of a peaceful voice, emotional sweetness, and the healing of inner waters.

Most important deposits and countries

Larimar is found exclusively in the Dominican Republic, in the Barahona region. It was discovered in 1974 and its name derives from Larissa (daughter of the discoverer) and mar (sea, in Spanish). It is considered a gift of the ocean, often associated with the lost civilization of Atlantis and ancestral feminine energies.
