Physical and chemical characteristics of Howlite

Howlite is a calcium borosilicate with the chemical formula Ca₂B₅SiO₉(OH)₅. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, has a hardness of 3.5 on the Mohs scale, and a subvitreous to opaque luster. Its natural color is milky white with gray or black veins, but it is often dyed blue to imitate turquoise. It is a calming stone, associated with peace of mind, awareness, and the release of emotional tension. It promotes meditation, reflection, and the conscious management of emotions.

Family of belonging, sister stones and colors

It belongs to the borosilicate family and is energetically linked to selenite, lepidolite, and magnesite for its relaxing and balancing effect. The most common color is white with gray veins, similar to marble. It is the stone of inner silence, observation, and subtle transformation.

Most important deposits and countries

The main deposits are found in Canada, the United States (California), Germany, Mexico, and Turkey. Discovered in 1868, it takes its name from Henry How, the Canadian chemist and mineralogist who identified it. It is widely used in meditation, emotional release rituals, and to promote sleep and peaceful dreams.

Howlite is associated with the sign of Cancer (June 22 – July 22), a deep, empathetic, and lunar Water sign. It helps Cancerians release inner turmoil, sleep peacefully, and find emotional stability. Its associated planet is the Moon, but also Neptune in its dreamlike and intuitive dimension. The symbolic constellation is the Night Gull: the silent traveler of dreams and a quiet mind.
